What To Expect

We believe that Sunday worship is not a passive event which the congregation sits and watches, but an active experience in which we all celebrate our love of God and each other.  Consequently, First Church worship is often upbeat, informal, participatory and, above all, a joyous celebration of our community.

During our program year (first Sunday after Labor Day through the end of June), Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. (July and August services begin at 9:30 a.m.) The service generally includes four components – gathering, listening, responding and going forth –  although the style of each may vary in response to liturgical themes or world events.  Lay readers are important participants in each worship service, and the congregation has many opportunities to participate as well – in prayers, sharing joys and concerns, and singing.

Communion is offered on the first Sunday of every month.  Communion recalls the table fellowship Jesus shared with his disciples and in particular the Last Supper.  At First Church, the Deacons generally pass trays of bread cubes and individual small cups of grape juice to those seated in the pews, but in keeping with special themes, we may share a common loaf of bread and cup of wine, or observe the practice of intinction (dipping a piece of bread in the wine).  Regardless of the particular practice used, we always abide by these words:  “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome at this table.”

We offer childcare for children up to age 3 in the nursery, but also provide “worship bags” of crayons, drawing paper, and other kid-friendly stuff for young ones who prefer to stay in the sanctuary with their parents.
