Compassion and service are hallmarks of the First Church experience. The Serve Committee strives to bring opportunities to the congregation to serve our community in Granby, our state, our country and the world by providing basic necessities, advocating for justice, and letting loose God’s love throughout the world.
Feeding the Hungry
Granby Food Bank: Non-perishable items and monetary donations from the First Church community help to support our local food bank. Currently on the First Saturday of each month from 9:30am to 11am, we have a contact-free drive up/drop off event. This is a wonderful way to directly impact our neighbors in need here in Granby.
Holcomb Farm Fresh Access Program: First Church has been a supporter of Fresh Access, the charitable arm of Holcomb Farm since it became a separate non-profit enterprise along with the production farm and the CSA. Fresh Access delivers fresh vegetables to members of our Granby Community (e.g., Senior Center, Waste Not Want Not Kitchen, Granby Social Services) and to Hartford-based organizations.
Westfield Soup Kitchen: First Church volunteers prepare and serve dinner several times a year to this venerable organization located in southwestern Massachusetts. This organization has been in operation since 1986 and serves an average of 1200 meals monthly.
Thanksgiving Baskets: Each November members of the congregation contribute the contents of food baskets that are distributed by the Granby Department of Social Services to needy residents. Each basket contains 40 items, which are divided into shopping lists of 2 to 3 items.
Loving our Neighbors
Habitat for Humanity:
Covenant to Care: Covenant to Care of Connecticut partners with area faith communities to advocate for, mentor, and provide direct assistance to children and youth experiencing neglect or abuse. First Church participates in its Adopt-a-Social-Worker Program, through which we partner with an individual social worker to provide support for the children in that social worker’s caseload. First church has been supporting MIOP – Maternal Infant Outreach Program for several years. We have two major efforts each year. In December and January, donations are collected to purchase car seats and gift cards for the program. In recent years we have been able to donate 25 new car seats as well as gift cards. In May, we ‘Fill the Crib’ for Mother’s Day. Donations of baby items overflow the crib and are distributed by MIOP to their clients.
Twisted Stitchers: Twisted Stitchers outreach knits and crochets baby items for the Maternal Infant Outreach Program, as well as Prayer shawls that are distributed to those in need in our Congregation as well as our greater community.
Transportation Action Program (TAP): Organized more than 50 years ago by First Church, TAP now partners with Granby’s Senior Transportation Service to provide Granby residents with rides to medical appointments.
