Seasonal Worship

First Church offers a variety of special services, including the following.

  • Homecoming Sunday. Held in September, this service is an opportunity for our faith family to reunite after summer travels and to celebrate the beginning of a new program year. A lively picnic follows the service.
  • Blue Christmas Service. This service is held in December for anyone in the community who is facing a difficult loss.
  • Christmas Eve. There is a family service designed for children and a candlelight service.
  • Star Sunday is an observance on Epiphany Sunday. Each person receives a star with a single word printed on it to “guide” them through the coming year. But before they receive their new star, they bring last year’s star and share stories of how they have been led by the star.
  • Ash Wednesday. This evening service marks the beginning of the season of Lent.
  • Maundy Thursday. Beginning with a simple meal, this solemn evening service recalls the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples. As the story is told, candles are extinguished until the room is dark and the service ends with the tolling of a single bell 33 times.
  • Easter. An ecumenical sunrise service is held at a local park, followed by a service in the Sanctuary at 10 a.m. The Sacrament of Communion is celebrated, and special music accompanies the services.
  • Blessing of the Animals: Held outdoors (weather permitting), this Sunday service is especially popular with the animal lovers in our congregation. Participants, in addition to cats and dogs, have included iguanas, ferrets and other unusual critters.
