Communion. One of two sacraments celebrated in the United Church of Christ (baptism is the other), communion recalls the table fellowship Jesus shared with his disciples and in particular the Last Supper. At First Church, the Deacons generally pass trays of bread cubes and individual small cups of grape juice to those seated in the pews, but in keeping with special themes, we may share a common loaf of bread and cup of wine, or observe the practice of intinction (dipping a piece of bread in the wine). Regardless of the particular practice used, we always abide by these words: “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome at this table.”
Baptism. The sacrament of baptism marks a person’s acceptance into the care of Christ’s church and the beginning of Christian faith and life. Although baptism generally involves infants and children, older youth and adults may also be baptized. During the ceremony, a few drops of water are sprinkled on the person’s head as the parents, sponsors, and congregation welcome the person into our community. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, baptism occurs during worship when the congregation is present because baptism includes the community's promise of love, support and care for the baptized. Confirmation. Confirmation is a rite that affirms baptism, and at First Church it generally occurs in 9th grade, although it may include other age groups. Confirmation takes place during public worship, as the confirmand affirms his or her baptismal promises and presents a personal statement of faith. Prior to confirmation, confirmands generally engage in a season of spiritual exploration and discussion.
Weddings. The essence of Christian marriage is a formal covenant between two persons that has its foundation in God’s love. We at First Church delight in sharing such a special time with both members and non-members. For more information, download file below.
Funerals. First Church shares in the sorrow of those who lose loved ones, and is privileged to conduct funeral services for them. For more information, download file below.
Memorial Garden. The First Church Memorial Garden was created in recognition of the growing trend toward cremation and our desire for a sacred place that ensures the caring disposition of our loved ones’ cremated remains. For more information, download file below.
