Clothing and Sheltering the Cold

Bike & Build: First Church is an enthusiastic supporter of Bike & Build, a non-profit entity that organizes cross-country bicycle trips to raise funds for affordable housing. Each June we host approximately 30 riders in the early days of their trip, and provide sleeping quarters, hot showers, delicious meals, and the encouragement and respect of our faith community.

Habitat for Humanity: For many years First Church members have donated their time and resources to the Hartford chapter of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit organization that works with people of diverse faiths and backgrounds to build affordable homes and to provide homeownership opportunities for low income families. Recent efforts have supported the building of hundreds of homes in Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 hurricane as well as ongoing construction in the South Marshall Street neighborhood of Hartford.

Mission Trips Each summer G-Crew (the FCC high school group) embarks on a week-long trip to an economically depressed area of the US. Crew members spend their days providing home repairs, renovations and improvements for the residents, and their evenings engaged in lively discussions of sharing, compassion and other qualities of a vital life of faith.

NeedleworX: NeedleworX is a group of talented and dedicated First Church knitters and crocheters who create prayer shawls to comfort those who are suffering illness or loss and baby items for area hospitals.

Simply Smiles: Simply Smiles is a homegrown (Connecticut UCC) mission outreach to the Lakota people on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in La Plant, South Dakota. The needs on the Reservation are staggering; decades of neglect and abuse have created insurmountable poverty that has left houses, community buildings and basic infrastructure in disrepair. It has also chipped away at the sense of community solidarity. Every summer, from May through October, work trips are organized to help bring hope through building homes and personal relationships.
